T he biggest social plague is due to HIV disease. Suffice it to think that in 2013 1.4 million people lived with HIV in Tanzania, accounting for an estimated prevalence of about 5%. This represents 6% of the total number of people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa and 4% of all people living with HIV globally. In 2013, 72,000 people were infected with HIV, and 78,000 people died.
Like most other sub-Saharan Africa countries, Tanzania has a very young population. One-third of the country’s population are boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 24. It is estimated that about 2% of 15-24-year-olds living with HIV, accounting for 11% of all HIV-infected people in Tanzania.
